I’m a women’s health whizz – there are 6 different vagina smells and it’s bad news if it’s bleach

STRONG smells can be off-putting, especially if there’s a stench coming from down below.

While the scent of the vagina varies from person to person, experts have said there are some you should be concerned about.

Vaginas don’t smell of roses – but there are some scents that you should be concerned about

Dr Elisabeth Rosén said down below has a natural bacterial flora that’s there to keep good balance.

It’s because of this natural bacteria that the cervical mucus in the vagina will always have a smell.

She explained that some women will also experience a fluctuation of smells due to their period.

The Livi doctor said there are a variety of scents and that generally, if you’re feeling well and your vaginal odour or discharge isn’t unusual for you, there’s no reason to worry.

But what are the different vagina smells, and when should you be concerned?

1. Fishy

If you have a bit of a fishy smell down below, then Dr Rosén said this could be down to an infection called trichomoniasis.

She explained: “It’s a parasitic disease that typically doesn’t cause a lot of symptoms.

“Some people experience subtle symptoms like a yellowy-green vaginal discharge with an unpleasant smell, and the vulva can be a little red and itchy. A course of antibiotics usually clears it up.”

2. Bleach

Some people like the smell of bleach/amonia as it reminds them of cleanliness, but most wouldn’t want their privates smelling of it.

Experts at female healthcare provider Cheeky Bonsai, which is approved by gynaecologist Dr Emily Von Bargen, said you might need to visit a doctor if your vagina smells like this.

Posting on TikTok, the experts explained that a bleachy smell could indicate a little bit of urine around the vulva.

Or, they said, it can be a sign of a bacterial infection.

Dr Rosén said an infection that’s left untreated will also cause a fever, and the smell will be quite distinct and sickly.

She added that sometimes, it can also be a sign of an incontinence issue that you are unaware of and your GP can help with.

3. Rotten

You’ve changed your knickers, washed your jeans and used feminine wash, but there’s still a smell down there which just won’t go away.

If this sounds like you – then it could be down to a forgotten tampon.

This is dangerous because products that have been left in too long can cause toxic shock syndrome – which is a very rare illness.

Dr Rosen said that if this bacteria enters your system then you will become very sick, very fast.

The key signs to look out for are a high fever, blood pressure changes, diarrhoea, vomiting and possibly a rash.

4. Yeasty

For some people, thrush can become smelly and if the stench is that of yeast, you should visit your GP to rule out any underlying conditions.

These sorts of infections are very common and symptoms are itching or burning down there and discharge that might become lumpy and white – like cottage cheese.

5. Metallic

The experts at Cheeky Bonsai said a metallic smell could indicate period blood – they said you may also experience this smell post-sex.

But in rare circumstances, this smell can be down to cervical or uterine cancer.

However, these won’t be the only or first symptoms of illness and you should always see your GP if you are worried.

6. Tangy

If the smell below is a bit tangy, then the experts at Cheeky Bonsai said this is normal and means your vaginal PH is in balance.

A sour or tangy smell is nothing to worry about – but if you have any concerns you should seek medical advice.

It’s important to recognise when a smell is abnormal for you.

Making simple changes like unscented washes and sprays is a start and just using water down there is enough to clean the vagina.
