What does the "vitamin") mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients in the foods we consume. The body cannot make vitamins; therefore, they must be obtained from food.

There are two types if vitamins: water soluble, and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin. B6 is pyridoxine. Folic acid, biotin and pantothenic are some examples. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A, beta carotene, and A-vitamins.

Vitamins are classified based on their biological activity. There are eight major types of vitamins.

  • A - Vital for healthy growth.
  • C is important for nerve function and energy production.
  • D – Essential for healthy teeth, bones and joints
  • E is required for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - Required for healthy nerves and muscles.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins varies depending on age, gender, and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For adults aged 19 and older, the RDA for vitamin B is 400 micrograms daily. Pregnant mothers need 600 micrograms a day to ensure fetal growth. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Babies under one-year old need 700 micrograms per daily. Between 9 and 12 month, however, this drops to 500 mg per day.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

Adults over 50 years of age need 2000 micrograms per day for general health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.

Women who are pregnant and lactating need more nutrients than the RDA. Pregnant mothers need 4000 micrograms per daily during pregnancy and 2500 after giving birth. Breastfeeding moms need 5000 micrograms per daily when breastmilk production occurs.
