Healthy Eating for Students

health tips for healthy living

You will want to eat right whether you are heading off to college or just hanging around at your local college dorm. For your brain to function optimally and your health to last a lifetime, you will need to make sure your body is healthy. Healthy breakfasts can make it easier to stay on the right path.

It's not hard to see that college students are limited in their time and can be restricted by what they eat. This can be overcome by making healthy choices a daily habit and planning meals and snacks ahead. This is perhaps the most important thing to do in order to have a fun and healthy college experience. This will ensure that you aren't stuck in the kitchen at the last minute while your classmates are on the town. It is essential to have a fully stocked pantry and fridge in order to prevent nutritious foods being lost or wasted.

Keeping a tally of what you eat will keep you on the straight and narrow. There are some simple steps you can take to help you do this, like buying a few cans of food when you shop, making an effort to eat out less and choosing healthier choices when you do.

What can I do to boost my immune system?

The human body is composed of trillions if not billions of cells. Each cell works together to create organs and tissues that fulfill specific functions. Another cell takes its place when a cell dies. Chemical signals, called hormones, allow cells to communicate with each other. Hormones regulate all bodily functions from growth and developmental to metabolism and immunity.

Hormones can be described as chemicals produced by glands in the body. They are messengers that help control how our bodies operate. Some hormones are made internally, while some are externally produced.

The hormone-producing glands release their contents into bloodstream. This is when hormone production starts. Once hormones are released, they move through the body to reach their target organ. Some hormones may only remain active for a limited time. Other hormones remain active longer and still have an influence on the body's functioning long after they leave bloodstream.

Some hormones are made in large quantities. Some hormones can be produced in large amounts.

Certain hormones can only be produced at specific times in life. Estrogen is one example. It's produced in puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Women can get estrogen to build breasts, prevent osteoporosis, and keep their bones healthy. It also promotes hair growth and keeps skin smooth and soft.

Small changes to your diet or exercise routine can help you start losing weight. To lose weight, you can start walking 30 minutes per day. For more activity, you can try swimming or dancing. An online fitness program such as Strava or Fitbit that tracks your activity could be a good option.

What's the difference between a virus & a bacterium?

A virus, a microscopic organism that can not reproduce outside of its host cells, is called a virus. A bacterium can be described as a single-celled organism which reproduces by splitting in two. Viruses can be as small as 20 nanometers, while bacteria can grow up to 1 micron.

Viruses can spread from contact with bodily fluids that are infected such as saliva, urine or semen. Bacteria can be spread by direct contact with infected objects and surfaces.

Viral infections can be transmitted through skin cuts, scrapes and bites. They can also enter the body through the nose and mouth, eyes, ears or rectum.

Bacteria can be introduced to our bodies by cuts, scrapes or burns. They may also enter our bodies from food, water, soil, dust, and animals.

Both bacteria as well as viruses can cause illness. But viruses do not have the ability to multiply within their hosts. Viral infections can only cause diseases in living cells.

Bacteria can spread within the host and cause illness. They can even invade other parts of the body. That's why we need antibiotics to kill them.
