National challenges exist in providing protection services for the aged. A recent survey of state Adult Protective Services programs conducted by the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse on behalf of the National Center on Elder Abuse revealed a dramatic increase in the number of elder abuse reports in 2001. Although the data is only a fraction of the total reports that were analyzed, it shows that it is difficult for accurate conclusions to be drawn from the limited data.
Adult Protective Services are public response programs that prevent and responds to abuse reports. These programs are provided by social workers. They are responsible for conducting investigations, developing case plans and counseling clients. These activities give vulnerable adults the opportunity to live independently. However, service delivery is complex and has to balance a commitment to protecting a vulnerable adult's right to self-determination with the need to provide a comprehensive range of services.

APS defines and targets different groups in each state. There are also no universal definitions. This has led the to the creation of a multitude of state and regional APS programs. However, most states have followed a common model of protective service delivery. This means that although there is similar knowledge about the extent and severity of adult abuse, there are not enough national leaders. This creates a complex system of local programs, which often have different identities, approaches to delivery of services, and service standards.
Researchers, practitioners, activists, and advocates have all found it difficult to gather accurate data regarding the number and nature cases being served through local APS programs. This is due to two main reasons: (1) lack of a mandatory reporting system from the state; (2) lack of uniform definitions. Accordingly, the number of APS elder-abuse reports has increased significantly over ten years. This is more than the growth in the elderly population.
APS workers believe that excluding elder violence from the definition would limit the availability of services and marginalize self-neglecting adult. However, research has shown that a majority of the cases served by APS are self-neglecting adults. A complex criminal investigation can also be initiated if self-neglect becomes a problem.
The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse reviewed 472,813 reported cases of vulnerable adult abuse. The study highlights the most common areas of mistreatment. These include neglect, physical abuse, and property exploitation. While elder abuse cases have seen a significant increase in the last decade, many other instances go unreported. There are a few studies that examine the effectiveness of APS, but they are rare.

The National Association of Adult Protective Services Administrators, (NAAPSA), is a voluntary non-profit organization that supports vulnerable adults' access to services. The state and local APS members are the organizations' representatives. The National Academy on an Aging Society is also published by the organization. This publication aims to promote understanding and offer guidance to older adults who are caring for them.

Does cold make you weaker?
It's been said that there are two kinds of people in the world; those who love winter and those who hate it. But, regardless of whether you love or loathe winter, you might be wondering why it makes you miserable.
Our bodies were designed to work best in warm climates. We evolved to thrive in hot environments because of the abundance of food resources.
Today's environment is vastly different from the one our ancestors experienced. We spend more time indoors, are often exposed at extreme temperatures (cold and hot), and eat processed food rather than fresh.
As a result, our bodies aren't used to such extremes anymore. So, when we do venture out into the outdoors, we often feel exhausted, sluggish or even sick.
However, there are ways to counter these effects. The best way to avoid these problems is to ensure that your body stays hydrated throughout the day. Water is essential for your body to function properly and eliminate toxins.
Also, ensure you eat healthy food. Consuming healthy food helps maintain your body's optimal temperature. This is especially helpful for people who spend a lot of time indoors.
Take a few minutes every morning to meditate. Meditation helps you relax your mind and body, which makes it easier to deal with stress and illness.
What is the difference between fat and sugar?
Fat is an energy source that comes from food. Sugar is naturally found in fruits and veggies. Both fats as well as sugars contain the same amount of calories. However, fats provide more calories than sugars.
The body stores fats and they can lead to obesity. They can cause cholesterol buildup which can lead to strokes and heart attacks.
Sugars are quickly absorbed by the body and provide instant energy. This causes blood sugar levels to rise. High blood glucose levels can lead to type II diabetes.

How to lead a healthy lifestyle
We live in a fast world where we don't get enough sleep, eat too much, drink too much alcohol and smoke cigarettes. We don’t take proper care of our bodies.
It is very hard to find a balanced diet and exercise routine when you work fulltime and do all these things at the same time. It becomes even harder if you are stressed out because your mind tells us that we cannot handle this situation anymore so we start feeling guilty and give up.
If you feel like something is wrong with your body, then it probably is. Ask your doctor for his/her opinion about your current situation. If nothing is abnormal, it might be stress due to your job.
Some people believe they are fortunate because their jobs enable them to regularly go to the gym or because they have good friends who help them stay fit. However, those people are really lucky. They don't have problems. They managed everything. I wish everyone could be one of them. Most people don't know how balance work and life. Many people fall prey to bad habits, which can eventually lead them to developing diseases like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
These are some tips to help you improve your life.
