Providing protective services for the elderly is a national challenge. A survey of the state Adult Protective Services programs was conducted by the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse on behalf of the National Center on Elder Abuse. The results showed a dramatic rise in elder abuse reported in 2001. The study shows that even though the numbers represent only a small portion of the reports that need to be analyzed it is difficult to draw precise conclusions from such limited data.
Adult Protective Services (APS), a public response program, is designed to prevent abuse of vulnerable adults and to respond to them. These programs are managed by social workers and are found within human service agencies. They conduct investigations, develop case plans, counsel clients, and monitor service delivery. These activities give vulnerable adults the opportunity to live independently. But service delivery can be complex. You have to balance the need for a wide range of services and a commitment that a vulnerable adult has to self-determination.

APS uses different target groups and definitions. There are no uniform national definitions. This has led the to the creation of a multitude of state and regional APS programs. However, most states have followed a common model of protective service delivery. This means that there is a similar level of knowledge about the extent of vulnerable adult abuse, but there is a lack of national leadership. This results in a complicated system of local programs that often have different identities and delivery methods.
Researchers, practitioners, and advocates find it difficult to collect accurate data on the nature of local APS cases. The main reasons are: (1) the absence a state-mandated system for reporting; (2) the absence uniform definitions. Accordingly, the number and severity of elder abuse reported to APS has increased dramatically over the past ten year, exceeding the growth in elderly population.
APS workers believe that excluding elder violence from the definition would limit the availability of services and marginalize self-neglecting adult. Research has shown that the majority of cases handled by APS involve self-neglecting individuals. Self-neglect could also lead to a complicated criminal investigation.
The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse reviewed 472,813 reported cases of vulnerable adult abuse. This study identified the main areas of abuse and neglect. While elder abuse cases have seen a significant increase in the last decade, many other instances go unreported. There are a few studies that examine the effectiveness of APS, but they are rare.

The National Association of Adult Protective Services Administrators is a volunteer non-profit organization that supports the mission of increasing the availability of services to vulnerable adults. Through its members of the local APS administrators, the organization is able to have a national presence. The organization also publishes the National Academy on an Aging Society, which aims to foster an understanding of aging and provide guidance to those who care for older adults.

Supplements and herbs can improve immunity
Natural remedies and herbs can be used to increase immune function. Some common examples include garlic, ginger, oregano oil, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, and vitamin C.
These herbs should not be considered as a substitute for conventional medical treatment. Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps and headaches.
What should my diet consist of?
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and help to strengthen your immune system. Fruits and veggies are also high in fiber, which makes them filling and helps with digestion. Try to include at least five servings of fruit and veg per day.
Get plenty of water. Water helps flush toxins out of your body and makes you feel fuller between meals. Drink about eight glasses each day.
Whole grains are better than refined grains. Whole grains contain all of their nutrients, including B vitamins and iron. Refined grains lack some nutrition.
Avoid sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are full of empty calories and lead to obesity. Instead, opt for water, milk, or unsweetened tea.
Avoid fast food. Fast food is low in nutritional value. You won't get the energy you need to function well, despite how delicious it may be. Avoid soups, sandwiches and other unhealthy options.
Try to limit alcohol intake. Alcohol contains empty calories and contributes to poor nutrition. Limit your consumption to no more then two alcoholic beverages per week.
Try to cut down on red meat. Red meats can be high in cholesterol and saturated fat. You should choose lean cuts like beef, pork lamb, chicken and fish instead.
