Protective Services for the Elderly

ways of healthy living

Protecting the elderly is a national problem. The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse conducted a survey of adult protective services programs in states for the National Center on Elder Abuse. It found a significant increase in elder abuse reports for 2001. The study shows that even though the numbers represent only a small portion of the reports that need to be analyzed it is difficult to draw precise conclusions from such limited data.

Adult Protective Services, also known as APS, are public response programs which aim to prevent and respond promptly to reports of abuse or neglect of vulnerable adults. These programs are provided by social workers. These programs include counseling clients, conducting investigations and developing case plans. These activities give vulnerable adults the opportunity to live independently. Service delivery is complicated. You must find a way to both respect vulnerable adults' right to self-determination and provide a full range of services.

APS defines and targets different groups in each state. There are also no universal definitions. It has resulted in a wide variety of state- and local APS programs. The majority of states have adopted a common model for protective service delivery. This means that most states have a common model of protecting adult victims. However, the lack of leadership at the national level is evident. This creates a complicated system with many local programs. They often have different identities, delivery methods, and standards.

Researchers, practitioners, and advocates find it difficult to collect accurate data on the nature of local APS cases. The main reasons are: (1) the absence a state-mandated system for reporting; (2) the absence uniform definitions. Accordingly, the number and severity of elder abuse reported to APS has increased dramatically over the past ten year, exceeding the growth in elderly population.

APS workers contend that excluding elder abusive from the definitions of abuse would reduce resources and marginalize the self-neglecting. Research shows that self-neglecting adults make up the majority of APS cases. Moreover, self-neglect can become a complex criminal investigation.

The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA) has reviewed 472,813 reports of abuse of vulnerable adults. This study identified the main areas of abuse and neglect. While elder abuse cases have seen a significant increase in the last decade, many other instances go unreported. In addition, there is a scarcity of studies that analyze the effectiveness of APS.

The National Association of Adult Protective Services Administrators is a volunteer non-profit organization that supports the mission of increasing the availability of services to vulnerable adults. The state and local APS members are the organizations' representatives. The National Academy on an Aging Society is also published by the organization. This publication aims to promote understanding and offer guidance to older adults who are caring for them.

What is the difference of a virus from a bacteria?

A virus is a microscopic organism that cannot reproduce outside its host cell. A bacterium can be described as a single-celled organism which reproduces by splitting in two. Viruses measure only 20 nanometers in diameter, but bacteria is up to 1 millimeter in size.

Viruses can be spread by contact with bodily fluids containing infected substances, such as saliva, urine and semen. Bacteria can be spread by direct contact with infected objects and surfaces.

Viruses can get into our bodies through cuts and scrapes on the skin, bites or other injuries. They can also enter the body through the nose and mouth, eyes, ears or rectum.

Bacteria can enter our bodies through wounds, cuts, scrapes, burns, insect stings, or other breaks in our skin. They may also enter our bodies from food, water, soil, dust, and animals.

Both bacteria as well as viruses can cause illness. Viruses cannot multiply in their host cells. Infecting living cells is what causes them to become sick.

Bacteria can grow in their hosts and cause disease. They can infiltrate other parts of the body. We need antibiotics to get rid of them.
